Villamar ManamaOfficials on Tuesday approved early plans for a new Bahrain University campus in Muharraq.

Negotiations are reportedly under way with landowners to acquire a suitable plot of land for the campus, with Diyar Al Muharraq named as a possible location.

Bahrain has been working to accommodate a predicted surge in numbers of students seeking higher education.

The proposed campus is to be paid for the government with the necessary funding set out in Bahrain’s 2017 budget.

"When we heard about the proposal presented by MPs, before we officially received or discussed it, I ordered a study to be conducted by Bahrain University [into the feasibility and need for a new campus] and the positives outweighed the negatives,” Dr Majid Al Al Nuaimi, university chairman, education minister and Shura Council affairs minister was quoted as saying in the Gulf Daily News.

He reportedly added: “We have two campuses now – the main one in Sakhir and the College of Engineering in Isa Town, which we will have to move so that Bahrain Polytechnic can incorporate it as part of its facilities.

“Muharraq is our destination for a new campus, but we have not yet selected the location. There are bids for several and we will select the best, ask the government to buy it and then prepare designs.”

Dr Waheeb Alnasser, Bahrain University’s vice-president for planning and development was quoted as saying the new campus will offer 15 Bachelor programmes, 172 lecturers and accommodate 4,000 students.

The site required is 27,300m2, comprising education and recreational facilities, restaurants, a mosque, library and rest area.

“We have received the lowest offer from the investors of Diyar Al Muharraq, who offered BD8 per foot, as they want to urbanise their project, attracting people to live there and conduct business,” said Alnasser.
