JUST standing improves on world university ranking

The Jordan University of Science and Technology was ranked 601st among the 3,000 universities in this year’s QS World University RankingAMMAN — The Jordan University of Science and Technology (JUST) has improved its world ranking and topped the Kingdom’s universities in this year’s QS World University Ranking.

JUST, which is one of the Kingdom’s 10 public universities, ranked 362nd among 3,000 universities worldwide in engineering and technology specialisations, according to the QS ranking, which was issued this month.

The university also ranked fourth in engineering among 400 Arab universities participating in the ranking.

Moreover, the university ranked 115th in terms of international students, as non-Jordanians constitute 25 per cent of its total student body.

In the overall ranking, JUST came in the 601st cluster, among the 3,000 universities in the QS ranking. It was also ranked 18th among the Arab universities taking part in the annual ranking.

JUST President Abdallah Malkawi attributed the improvement to the advancement of scientific research at the university, which is one of the main indicators that factor into a university’s ranking.

Malkawi explained that JUST has increased financial incentives for researchers.

In addition, the university has increased the number of faculty members compared to the number of administrative staff, he said in a phone interview.

This year, the QS considered 3,000 universities around the world and ranked the top 700 in the world.

The ranking is based on six indicators: academic reputation, employer reputation, faculty per student, proportion of international students, percentage of international faculty and citations per faculty on the Scopus research database.

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology topped the list this year, followed by Harvard University and the University of Cambridge.

King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals in Saudi Arabia came in first place in the region.
